RESTORATION OF LOWER BIG SPRING CREEK - The Machler Project, 1961-2016:

In 1961 more than a mile of Lower Big Spring Creek was channelized destroying a significant section of world class trout habitat.

After more than 50 years of controversy, and through efforts by many federal, state, local agencies and groups (including MTU & STMU) funding was obtained and a restoration plan was implemented in July 2016.  Mark Machler breaks ground on the tractor used by his Uncle in 1961 to channelize the stream.

STMU chapter members cut over 15,000 willows for the restoration of the flood plain and channel.   L>R  Glenn Elison, Mike Getman, Candy Bowman, Mike Chapman, and a volunteer.
